Horowai does not control the water—he listens to it.

Through Te Reo o te Wai, he senses the memories, warnings and disturbances carried through rivers, lakes and oceans. Armed with his carved hoe, Horowai travels the pathways of the wai, protecting its mauri and calling upon its strength whenever tāngata or whenua are threatened.

Pikopikoiwhiti - The Great Waka Race

Long before his great voyage aboard Kurahaupō, a young Whātonga accepted a daring challenge from the people of Ahu—a waka race at Pikopikoiwhiti.

Whātonga and his crew surged ahead aboard Te Wao, but without warning, a violent storm swept across the ocean. Driven far from Hawaiki, they fought through wind, waves and heavy fog for two days before finally reaching the distant shores of Rangiātea.

The race was over—but Whātonga’s greatest adventures had only just begun.

Illustrated in a bold black-and-white comic style, this design celebrates courage, leadership and the ancestral stories that continue to connect Rangitāne across generations.

Mako Wear began as an independent sportswear label in 2019, built around movement, community and belonging.

When community sport stopped during the pandemic, Mako Wear stopped too.

Now its 2026 - it returns in a new form - simply “Mako” creating limited edition, everyday apparel and merchandise that carries the stories of our people, places and history.
